9 Favority-Favorite Things of '09 Challenge

Happy New Year's Eve! Today I'm giving myself an overdue Christmas present... three of them actually. Barnes and Nobles online has Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins on sale (ten bucks hardcover! Note: I am biased toward Peeta. Choose him, Katniss! Choose him!!), and of course I need to grab the free shipping by spending $25... it would be a waste of money not to, or so I tell myself, so I'm also picking up City of Bones by Cassandra Clare and Graceling by Kristin Cashore. So happy!

And the beautiful Karen at Scobberlotcher gave me an award! The Kreativ Blogger, thank you so much! I've received this one before, and here is the link to my oh-so-revealing answers, but I wanted to say thanks. Awards always make me smile.

In other shiny, happy news, there are book giveaways all over the place. Check out I'm Always Write for a chance to win Catching Fire (what? You haven't read Hunger Games???? Go! Read!!); Agent Rachelle Gardner has a poetry contest of sorts to win your choice out of ten books she's offering; and Book Dreaming is celebrating 100 Followers with a mega giveaway, with two winners each getting six books! I don't usually officially make any resolutions, however this year I am resolved to not just finish my wip, but to edit, revise, polish, and repeat, and make this story heart-wrenching-incredible before the end of 2010.

To round out the New Year, I thought it'd be fun to do my 9 Favority-Favorites of 2009. Then someday I can be like, "Aww, I can't believe I forgot about all those favorites!" And, "Wow, I used to say awesome a lot." Want to play? Here's the challenge:

1. Books: (I read these in 2009 and loved them, I'm not saying they were actually published in 2009): The Hunger Games, A Great and Terrible Beauty, Fragile Eternity, The Boleyn Inheritance, City of Jade, Princess Academy, Sirena, Valiant, The Poisonwood Bible

2. Authors: Meg Cabot, Sarah Desson, Shannon Hale, Isabelle Allende, Libba Bray, Clare B. Dunkle, Dennis McKiernan, Ally Carter, Laura Kinsale (Some of these are all-time faves, but I can't help it!)

3. Movies: Funny People, The Frog Princess, New Moon, The Time Traveler's Wife, The Proposal, 17 Again... can't think of any more!

4. Actors/Actresses: Hmm, I like Amy Adams, Eric Bana, and-- and-- and-- I'm bad with names! I hope all my answers don't suck :)

5. TV Shows: The Office, Survivor, 30 Rock, Community, and... oh man, this is hard to think up on the spot, but my DVR will tell you.

6. Songs: Fireflies, Let it Rock, Replay, anything by the bands in #7, I don't know! This seemed easier when I was coming up with the categories.

7. Band/Singer: The Fray, Linkin' Park, Greenday, Black-Eyed Peas, We The Kings, Hey Monday, Jordin Sparks, um-- um-- um-- there are more, I just need to get in the car and turn on the radio!

8. Foods/Restaurants: Hey, I don't like cooking but I love food! Give me sushi from Wasabi, ultra cheesy guacamole-smothered nachos from Camacho's, Zebra popcorn from Popcornopolis (I'll eat it until I make myself sick, seriously mouth-watering), those little cheese-filled curled things from Buca di Bepo... basically, take me to City Walk and let me take my pick, mmmmm!

9. Your Choice Favorites: Friends and family are my favority-favorite, but I also love writing of course, and my DVR, my laptop, my crit buddies, people who don't give my son Transformers, my wip, agents who read slush and reply, and my bloggity blog buddies! You guys are so awesome (whew, I managed to use 'awesome' only once today!).

Transform Your Writing and Other Cheesy Transformers References

Is it New Year's Resolution time already? I'm putting mine off. New Year's is still three days away, so I may as well live it up! And WOOHOO on my one hundred Followers!! Thank you guys! I need to come up with a brilliant way to celebrate... maybe another book giveaway?

The holidays have been crazy-busy for me, as I'm sure with everyone else. I haven't been able to get in any writing time (sob!), but today I'm definitely going to. I need a break, and writing is my lovvvve. 

Before I can write though, I have to distract my five-year-old and discreetly hide all his new Transformers. He received a bunch of the hateful things from well-meaning friends and family, (he told everyone that they're his favorite and he doesn't have ANY... well, there's a reason he doesn't have any. I hate them). It gets worse, though. There are different levels of Transformer torture, and my son received all of the most complicated, intricately crafted Transformers on the market today. The helicopter blades and missiles are impossible to attach, arms and legs keep popping off at the slightest pressure; he can't even transform the things, much less fix their broken limbs-- but he thinks I can do it! Rrrright. I'm not awesome at fixing things, toy or otherwise. I keep telling him to wait for Daddy to come home (as I smother an evil grin) but he wants to play nowwwwww- and why can't I just fix it- and he can't do it- and whine-whine-whine. Patience? Not my virtue. But I can fake it, and I do subscribe to mommy-guilt so FINE, I'll try. Let's see how fast I can transform these toys into piles of crushed plastic bits.

Now, cue the cheesy Transformers references... Even cheesier than this post title? Yes! Because good writing is (dramatic pause) more than meets the eye. Well, good writing is subjective, and books don't transform into battling robots warring between good and evil to decide the fate of the galaxy (yet... who knows what the next generation of e-readers will bring?). But good writing is more than whatever the blurb on the back of the book says (and more than the paragraph summary in a query). It has layers... it makes you think... and the best books, I believe, are the ones with characters that stay with you long after reading the last page. 

So how, as aspiring authors, do we make that happen? 

I ponder this as I read through my wip and fend off my son's continued requests to turn his Transformer into a helicopter and back again. Once I reach the end of my wip, will I have done it justice? There's nothing wrong with writing another YA romance, but I feel like there's something more to this story. And that's where it all comes back to revisions. Once I have the whole story written, I can hopefully turn this book into more than what it seems like on the surface. I can give it layers, make it one of those great stories that are even better on a reread...or at least, I can try as hard as I can to make it that kind of book. 


I have three completed novels. I've proven to myself that I can finish a novel. With THIS story, I want to do more. I want to make it great. I want it to be so great... so perfect... so rock-hard awesome that even a person who reads and edits books for a living-- a person who sees a hundred new story ideas a week-- even THAT person won't want to put it down. This is the book. I'm not querying this one too soon, or even rushing through scenes if I get stuck (if I must, I'll put brackets and [finish this later!]. I don't have to prove to myself that I can finish a book. Not anymore. I have to prove to myself that I can write a publishable book, one that resonates, that oozes writerly goodness (this is the GOAL!). I will chisel away at this story and take my time doing it. I will transform it from the idea it started out as, into a book that's ready to war against the forces of evil in an epic battle to decide the fate of the galaxy. Or a YA romance. Whatever. The point is, it'll be good or it won't be queried. Period.

Let it Shine, Let it Shine, Let it Shine

Ho ho ho and a bottle of rum, it's the holiday season! Lots of presents went out today (check the post below for awards) and apparently this Monday there's a big Merry Kissfest brewing in the writing blogosphere. I'll be under the mistletoe blowing you all kisses and hoping you'll do the same. If you're playing, this Monday (the first day of winter) post a kissing scene from your wip or an old manuscript you like. Woo hoo! Let's get our jingle on!

AND...

This Monday also starts Unplug Week, (if you have no idea what that is, go HERE). I will be taking shameless advantage of unplugging to catch up with life and spend some quality time with the family... and maybe my wip!

Life is at the expected level of Holiday Crazy over here, but I'm loving the warm weather. Coldness makes me whiny and insufferable, so it's good that I live in a place where I can see the snow and drive to the snow but do not have to actually live in the snow. I'll admit it though, yesterday when it reached eighty degrees I felt bizarre walking around in a tank top the week before Christmas. My part of California means I happen to live in a place where ear muffs are something my daughter wears to school on "crazy" day, and people dazzle up their cliched palm trees with twinkling lights. I like it. I'm not saying I hate snow. If I find a pot of gold, after buying my glam O.C. residence and a beach house in Hawaii, I am so getting a fabulous cabin in the mountains. To visit. And to have a place to warm up and sip white mochas before driving back to the warm, sunny valley where my kind, the coldblooded, freezing-toed, honey-I-need-your-jacket kind, belong. Maybe some of you who live in winter snow, as in, every day for weeks (months? I don't know... you tell me, snow-people. How does it work?), can enlighten me, but here's what goes through my mind at the end of a day in Wrightwood:

Ohhhh no, this is so not for me. Teeth chattering? And sitting in cold cars? And the kind of bone-deep freezingness that makes you feel like some super-villain blew his ice breath on you and you had to battle through the blast with the sheer force of your will? No-no-no children, it would not be fun to live in the snow, but it'll be fun again next Saturday. Let's go home!

That kind of thing on a daily basis would make me extremely whiny. No one would be my friend anymore. I'm annoying enough in my fake L.A. coldness, complaining about being freezing when the temperature dips anywhere below sixty, begging my husband to get me Starbucks, frustrating him with all the extra blankets ("Really, Diana? A fleece pullover and a wool cap? I feel like I'm sleeping next to the grandpa on Transformers. Seriously, take off the hat. Fine, I'll turn on the heater."). 

Anyway, I admire people who love living in the snow, all red-cheeked and cheerful in their fluffy clothes and adorably frosting-topped houses all winter. I may not want to live in the snow, but I am extremely grateful that I live close to it. If I were still in Miami and had no prospects of snow days at all, I would feel like something was missing... maybe. :)

So what's your take? Should snow stay up on the mountains where it belongs? Or are you all sparkly-eyed-excited when the city is a blanket of white? Let it snow or let it shine?

Before I go I want to say, you blogger friends amaze me. It seems like the holidays haven't made a dent in your blogging, meanwhile I can barely keep up with all the holiday craziness of shopping (which I hate) and wrapping (which I hate) and the kids' Christmas shows and practices (which I love) and preparing for family get-togethers (also love)-- the list is beyond endless. If I don't comment back, a thousand hugs and sorries, but I will be back on Monday to post my kissing scene and officially unplug for Unplug Week (I don't count Stephanie's party as plugging back in. From Me to You Award

Okay, ANOTHER award, the last one... and it's a double-whammy from BOTH Shannons! Shannon Messenger at Ramblings of a Wannabe Scribe and Shannon O'Donnell at Book Dreaming awarded me with the From Me to You Award (I think it's also going around as the "Picaso" award). I am set with the task of nominating seven blogs and revealing seven truths about me you don't already know. Oh, em, gee, you guys know EVERYTHING about me! What more could I reveal? Okay, I will try.

Truths:

1. I just beat the Temple of Time in Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. What?! Diana plays video games? No, because I have no time. But I would! Too bad, so sad. After I post this I've got two boys to bathe and a load of laundry to fold AND a pile of shirts to iron. Not to mention I like reading and writing more than video games... but every now and then I'll sit with my daughter and get into some Zelda action. And yeah, I kick butt.

2. I'm addicted to Survivor. I've watched since Australia! My husband want Brett to go all the way but I keep rooting for Russell. (The husband hates Russell).

3. Some of my all-time favorite books: Bridge to Terabithia, The Once and Future King, The Chronicles of Narnia, Immortal Instruments, Anne of Green Gables, a lot of Shakespeare, a lot of Jane Austen, Both Sides of Time, A Wrinkle in Time, The Hobbit (LotR was too bulky), Ella Enchanted, Fifteen, The Beginning Place, The Secret Garden... okay this was a bad idea. I could go on forever.

4.  I love to bake; I hate to cook, clean, sew, garden, knit, or do most other domestically-inclined activities. But my baking is pretty rockin.

5.  I've written stories since before I knew what an author was, and I narrate people... like right now. I didn't know what to write for number five so I looked over and saw my son, and my head automatically goes, "The boy flicked the bed with his hands as he rolled from side to side. Like a log. A destructive log of mayhem. He rolled down the side, pulling down the covers as he slid to the floor and onto the pile of folded laundry. Now it would have to be refolded and the bed was a mess." 

6.  I ran out of ideas. And five was pretty weak. I'll tell you a daydream: Getting up in the morning and going to the library or Starbucks to write. No interruptions. Nobody asking me for more juice. Nobody making comments about piles of laundry. Repeating this four days a week. Ha. Ha. Ha.

7.  Man I must really want this. Okayyyy.... to make up for my generally lame answers, I'll give a few truths in this one: in high school I had a spiral perm; I speak fluent but grammatically questionable Spanish; I took three years of French and I only wish I was fluent; and I don't know what else. I love trying new foods.

A Quick and Dirty Shout Out

I'm posting for no reason except to say hi, and for those of you stalking since the Wednesday Rant, my husband and I caught the kids' horrible stomach virus. The kids are all peachy, and we have been... holding it together. Here were my thoughts Sunday night:

"I'm breathing. I must be alive on some primal level."

Here were my thoughts Monday:

"There have been worse things in my life. None come to mind. I will pray for sleep, or a debilitating blow to the head until this is over."

Here were my thoughts Monday night:

"Will this ever be over? When will this be over? AHHHHHHH!!!!!!"

Here are my thoughts today:

"I'm hungry. I'm a little too paralyzed by the terror of the past two days, so I won't eat... but I'm hungry. This is... better."

Here's hoping for a brighter tomorrow. And may it all end here... I can't think of an enemy deserving of this kind of torture. At least, none I'd name publicly or anything.

Book Talk: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith

Look, it's the Deluxe Heirloom Edition of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies! Complete with black ribbon built-in bookmark and that cool, scruffy-edged paper... it's a book to be shared for generations to come. Sadly, this fount of literature was not mine to keep. I borrowed it from my stepsister-in-law (I'll leave you to figure out the family tree to that). Apparently the deluxe heirloom edition also has a whopping thirty percent more zombies than the original, and thirteen additional oil paintings. I can't tell you guys if that's better or worse, not having read the first Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but this one was heavy on the zombie action, and so much fun!

For the record, I'm a big fan of Jane Austen. I have her complete works in a lovely, antiquey looking book, also with a ribbon-bookmark and rough-edged paper. It even has old-timey sketches throughout. However, I also have a depraved sense of humor, so I was immediately both horrified and delighted when this new book came out. I wasn't disappointed in either respect, ha!

First off, I loved it. I'm also a fan of Saturday Night Live, and maybe this book tapped into my enjoyment of a good parody. The best part about it though, was that I didn't feel like I was laughing AT Pride and Prejudice, it was just a "what if..." What if Regency England had been invaded by zombies (excuse me, I mean... unmentionables)? And yet, after fifty years, things have to settle into some state of normalcy, right? Mothers have to marry off their daughters; rich, snooty jerks have to look down their noses at people who are more charming but less financially fortunate; and of course, people still must fall in love. Against all odds. And even in the face of cursed, wretched beings in a desperate search for brains.

I know there's somewhat of a line-drawn-in-the-sand mentality with this book. And I won't argue that it's fine literature, but I will say it's pretty brilliant. And it's funny! Come on, it's hysterical! Darcy's letter, and the little bits about people in the funeral industry being out of work, and balls being interrupted by those locked out of hell, and ultimately... just the whole "ho-hum, zombies, just another day in Meryton," aspect of it-- I smiled and laughed through the whole book.

Who Loves You, Baby

Today is looking and smelling so much better. Thank you for the support yesterday, but I'm happy to say I've traded the disinfectant spray for a French vanilla latte and a toasty cinnamon raison bagel. Breakfast is my favorite, because it can all be dessert. Oooh, for anyone with the inclination, comment on your favorite breakfast food (in a fat and calorie-free universe).

For you award-lovers who can't wait, scroll down and feel the love! Today I have awards for everyone, but before I get to them, a few things I'm happy about:

1.   Marginally better kids! In the realm of stomach virus signs and symptoms, they are improving! No longer pukey, instead they are suffering from... well, you know. The lesser of the two stomach evils. But moms out there might agree, this is a much more manageable situation. WOO HOO!! 

2.  We got our Christmas tree last weekend and the house is all cute. Sure, it made for an odd combination of smells this week, but holiday cheer is good. And plus, the kids' Christmas excitement is adorable. 

3.   My little sister is engaged! For those of you who've followed since the Honest Scraps Award, she's following in my footsteps and marrying her high school boyfriend. Incidentally, my brother married his high school girlfriend a few years back. For the record, I don't know how that happened. My mom divorced her high school sweetheart and encouraged us to date widely, so maybe teenage-rebellion kicked in. ("So, I shouldn't settle down with the first guy I meet?! I'll show HER!")
